Preparation
- In a small bowl, mix the warm water and sugar, then add the yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually pour in the yeast mixture, mixing until a dough starts to form.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
Cooking
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and prepare two baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a rolling boil.
- Once risen, turn the dough out onto a floured surface and divide it into 1-inch pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.
- Carefully lower the pretzel bites into the boiling water using a slotted spoon, about 6-8 at a time. Boil for 30 seconds on each side, then remove and place them on the prepared sheets.
- Brush the tops of the pretzel bites with the beaten egg, sprinkling coarse sea salt on top. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- In a separate bowl, combine shredded cheese, softened cream cheese, and garlic powder. Heat until melted.
- Serve the pretzel bites drizzled with melted cheese or as a dip. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
These pretzel bites can be prepped in advance—just boil, freeze, and bake later for a spontaneous snack. For healthier swaps, try using whole wheat flour or a less fatty cheese.
