Preparation
- Start by peeling 4-5 large potatoes, ensuring they are clean and free of any imperfections. Using a grater, shred the potatoes into fine pieces. After shredding, squeeze out as much excess water as you can.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded potatoes and the finely diced onion. Season the mixture with a pinch of salt, black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, stirring well to distribute the flavors evenly.
- Sprinkle the flour over the potato-onion mixture. Mix thoroughly until the mixture holds together well when formed into patties.
- With clean hands, take a portion of the mixture and shape it into small, flat patties, compacted well to avoid them falling apart during frying.
Cooking
- In a large frying pan, heat enough vegetable oil over medium heat to cover the bottom. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties into the pan.
- Fry each side for 3-4 minutes or until they are golden brown and crispy.
Serving
- After frying, transfer the fritters onto paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve them hot, ideally accompanied by a dollop of apple sauce for an added burst of flavor.
Notes
For even more flavor, consider adding minced garlic or fresh herbs like parsley or chives to the mixture. Ensure to squeeze out as much moisture from the potatoes as possible to keep fritters crispy.
