Preparation
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing for about 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes, and drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the Sloppy Joe sauce and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes until heated through.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the slices of Texas toast on a baking sheet.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture over each slice.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese over each slice.
- Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serving
- Allow to cool slightly, then garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; can also freeze the Sloppy Joe mixture for up to 3 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
