  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey Choose lean ground turkey for a healthier option.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 can (15 oz) Manwich Sloppy Joe sauce or homemade sauce
  • 8 slices Texas toast Can use any thick, sturdy bread.
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or cheese blend
  • 2 tbsp olive oil For sautéing.
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing for about 3–4 minutes until softened.
  3. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes, and drain any excess grease.
  4. Stir in the Sloppy Joe sauce and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes until heated through.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the slices of Texas toast on a baking sheet.
  3. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture over each slice.
  4. Sprinkle shredded cheese over each slice.
  5. Bake in the oven for 10–12 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serving
  1. Allow to cool slightly, then garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; can also freeze the Sloppy Joe mixture for up to 3 months. Reheat in the microwave or oven.
