Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 2.5 lb sweet Vidalia onions Provide a natural sweetness.

Spices
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.75 tsp seasoned salt
  • 0.5 tsp dried oregano
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper For a gentle kick.
  • 0.25 tsp freshly ground black pepper
Other
  • 1 cup water For baking.
  • Cooking spray To prevent sticking.
  • Chopped fresh parsley For serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 13-inch by 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Slice the sweet Vidalia onions into 1/4-inch thick rounds and separate the rings, then layer them in the prepared baking dish.
Mix Ingredients
  1. In a small bowl, combine the dried parsley, dry mustard, garlic powder, seasoned salt, oregano, kosher salt, cayenne pepper, and black pepper.
  2. In another bowl, mix the mozzarella, cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses together.
Combine and Bake
  1. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the onion rings and dot with butter pieces. Pour 1/2 cup water into the bottom of the pan, then cover tightly with foil.
  2. Bake for 75 to 90 minutes until the onions are tender.
Add Cheese
  1. Remove the dish from the oven and sprinkle the cheese mixture evenly over the top.
  2. Return to the oven and bake uncovered for an additional 5 to 7 minutes until the cheese is melted.
Finish
  1. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese is browned in spots.
  2. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

To elevate your Tennessee Onions, consider adding Worcestershire sauce for umami, or try different onion varieties for unique flavors. You can make them a day in advance and store them in the refrigerator.
