Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 900 grams lean ground beef perfectly seasoned and juicy
  • 1.6 kilograms green cabbage coarsely chopped for a tender crunch
  • 1 large yellow onion finely chopped to add depth of flavor
  • 200 grams uncooked long grain white rice providing a hearty base
  • 5 milliliters fine sea salt enhancing the dish’s flavor profile
  • 820 grams tomato sauce rich and tangy to bring it all together
  • 830 milliliters beef broth ensuring the casserole is moist and flavorful

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. In a large nonstick skillet, over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until it’s fully browned, draining any excess fat.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped cabbage, finely chopped onion, uncooked rice, fine sea salt, tomato sauce, and the browned beef, mixing thoroughly.
Baking
  1. Transfer the mixture to a 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inch) baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  2. Pour the beef broth over the mixture.
  3. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 60 minutes.
  4. After baking, uncover and stir the casserole thoroughly. Return it to the oven for another 20-30 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the rice is fully cooked.
  5. Serve hot, optionally garnished with a dollop of sour cream or fresh herbs.

Notes

To enhance flavor, consider adding spices like paprika or Italian seasoning. Incorporate vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for added nutrition. Using leftover rice can save time, and for a lighter option, swap half the beef with ground turkey or a vegetarian protein source. Always taste your mixture before baking and adjust seasoning as necessary.
