Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  4. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, adding milk if the dough feels dry.
  6. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Use a snowflake-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on a lined baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until edges are golden brown and centers remain soft.
  4. Let cookies cool on a wire rack before decorating.

Notes

Use royal icing for a more polished look. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Dough can be frozen for up to three months.
