  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder Consider using dark cocoa powder for richer flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Can substitute half with sugar alternatives.
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil Can substitute with melted coconut oil or unsweetened applesauce.
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring Gel food coloring can be used for a vibrant color.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • powdered sugar for rolling For coating the cookie balls.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the granulated sugar and vegetable oil until well combined.
  4. Beat in the egg, then add the red food coloring and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  6. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Scoop portions of the chilled dough, roll them into balls, and coat each ball in powdered sugar.
  2. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about two inches apart.
  3. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are set but the centers remain soft.
  4. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Notes

For healthier variations, substitute half of the granulated sugar with a sugar alternative, or use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour. You can also add white chocolate chips or chopped nuts for an exciting twist!
