Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 450 g steak, thinly sliced (ribeye or sirloin work great) Thinly sliced for faster cooking
  • 1 tsp garlic salt To season the steak
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper For additional seasoning
  • 1 c green bell pepper, sliced Adds color and flavor
  • 1 large onion, sliced Sweet onion recommended
  • 8-10 slices white American cheese For melting over the top
  • 567 g bag frozen waffle cut fries Crispy base for toppings
  • 1 tbsp olive oil For sautéing

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C so it’s hot for melting the cheese.
  2. Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Once hot, add thinly sliced steak and season with garlic salt and black pepper. Sauté until browned on all sides, then set aside.
  3. Keep about 1 tablespoon of cooking juices in the skillet, discard the rest. Add sliced bell pepper and onion, cooking until tender but the bell pepper still has a bite. Set aside with the steak.
  4. Spread frozen waffle cut fries evenly in the skillet, layer on 4 slices of cheese, followed by the cooked steak and vegetables, then top with remaining cheese.
Baking
  1. Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 8-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  2. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a couple of minutes before serving.

Notes

For a lighter twist, use leaner cuts of steak or substitute with plant-based protein. Consider low-fat cheese or sweet potato fries for healthier options. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
