Preparation
- Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish and arrange the French bread slices in a single layer.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is well coated. Press down gently.
- Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the plastic wrap, dot the top with butter, and sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the edges are puffed and the top is golden brown.
- Let cool for 5 minutes, then sprinkle a little sugar on top and caramelize.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve.
Notes
Use day-old bread for better custard absorption. Experiment with flavors like almond extract or cardamom. Serve with fresh berries or whipped cream.
