Method
 

Preparation
  1. Generously butter a 9x13-inch baking dish and arrange the French bread slices in a single layer.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is well coated. Press down gently.
  4. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Remove the plastic wrap, dot the top with butter, and sprinkle with sugar.
  3. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the edges are puffed and the top is golden brown.
  4. Let cool for 5 minutes, then sprinkle a little sugar on top and caramelize.
  5. Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better custard absorption. Experiment with flavors like almond extract or cardamom. Serve with fresh berries or whipped cream.
