Ingredients

Pasta and Meat
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
Vegetables
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
Sauce and Cheese
  • 1 jar (26 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Herbs and Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is browned and the onions are translucent, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  4. Stir in the marinara sauce along with the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. In a large bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, half of the Parmesan, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
Assembly
  1. In a greased large baking dish, spread a layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Top with half of the cooked ziti and then half of the ricotta mixture. Repeat layering with remaining meat sauce, ziti, and ricotta mixture.
  2. Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Baking
  1. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil for the final 15 minutes.
  2. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.

Notes

For healthier alternatives, consider swapping regular pasta with whole-grain or gluten-free ziti and using lean turkey instead of ground beef.
