Preparation
- Start by pressing the tofu: Wrap the block of tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object on top to expel excess moisture. Leave it for at least 30 minutes.
- After pressing, cut the tofu into strips about 1-inch wide and 4 inches long to resemble tenders. The uniformity ensures even cooking.
- In a small bowl, mix together the honey, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper until well combined. This will be your marinade.
- Place the tofu strips in a shallow dish and pour the honey mustard marinade over them, ensuring each piece is well coated. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours for enhanced flavor.
- In a separate bowl, place the cornstarch. In another bowl, fill it with the breadcrumbs to set up your breading station.
Cooking
- Remove the marinated tofu from the refrigerator. Dredge each piece in the cornstarch, shaking off any excess, then dip it back into the marinade briefly before coating it in the breadcrumbs. Press gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick.
- In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat until shimmering but not smoking. Carefully add the breaded tofu tenders to the skillet in a single layer.
- Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
- Once cooked, transfer the tenders to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.
Serving
- Serve your honey mustard tofu tenders warm, drizzled with additional honey mustard sauce if desired. Enjoy as a main dish, appetizer, or snack!
Notes
Ensure that the tofu is well-pressed to achieve optimal crispiness. The longer you marinate, the bolder the flavors! You can add a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top before serving for a nutty finish. Try using an air fryer for a healthier option, adjusting the time accordingly.
