Preparation
- In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this mixture aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and optional almond extract to the butter mixture and mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, stirring gently until a dough forms. Do not overmix.
- Divide the dough into two portions. Add pink food coloring to one and orange to the other, mixing until the colors are vibrant.
- Wrap each portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour until firm.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the shapes, placing them on the prepared sheets.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are light golden. Let them cool completely on wire racks.
Decoration
- Decorate with royal icing to create floral designs and sprinkle edible glitter or colored sprinkles on top if desired.
- Let decorated cookies dry completely before serving or gifting.
Notes
Store decorated cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Unbaked dough can be frozen for up to three months.
