Method
Prepare the Burger Patties
- In a mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with the French onion soup mix, avoiding overmixing to retain tenderness.
- Divide the mixture into four equal parts and shape each into patties slightly larger than the buns.
- Season both sides liberally with salt and pepper, then set aside.
Caramelize the Onions
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat, then add sliced onions and a splash of water.
- Cover the pan and let the onions cook for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently and adding more water as needed until golden brown.
- For an elevated finish, stir in brandy or sherry and a pinch of thyme before removing from heat.
Cook the Burgers
- Heat your grill or skillet on medium-high heat and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side.
- During the last minute of cooking, lay a slice of cheese on each patty, letting it melt.
Assemble the Burgers
- Optionally toast the onion buns for extra crunch.
- Place the patty on the bottom bun, add caramelized onions, and finish with the top bun.
- Serve the burger hot with sweet potato fries or fresh salad.
Notes
You can freeze uncooked patties for future meals. Store leftovers tightly wrapped in the refrigerator and reheat gently.
