Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • 2 medium Yellow Onions Using both yellow and sweet onions can give extra depth to the dish.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Garlic powder can be a suitable alternative.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce Soy sauce or balsamic vinegar can be used as substitutes.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian option.
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme Dried thyme can be used, adjusting the amount accordingly.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Plain butter is recommended for richer flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Flour Gluten-free flour can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1 cup Cheese (Provolone or Swiss) Gruyère cheese is traditional.
  • 4 pieces Hamburger Buns Thick slices of garlic bread can be used instead.

Method

Caramelize the Onions
  1. Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, stirring frequently until golden brown and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes.
Add Garlic
  1. Once the onions are caramelized, add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, ensuring the garlic doesn’t burn.
Brown the Beef
  1. Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef to the center. Cook until browned, approximately 5–7 minutes.
Incorporate Seasonings
  1. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Gradually pour in the beef broth and allow to simmer and thicken.
Thicken the Mixture
  1. Sprinkle the flour evenly over the meat mixture, stirring continuously until well combined and thickened. Let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
Melt the Cheese
  1. Add cheese on top of the beef mixture, cover the skillet, and let the cheese melt.
Assemble the Sloppy Joes
  1. Toast the hamburger buns lightly, then spoon the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun and top with the other half. Serve hot.

Notes

Consider adding nutmeg or extra Worcestershire sauce for a deeper flavor. Garnish with fresh herbs or add spice with jalapeños. A squeeze of lemon juice can add a refreshing contrast.
