Ingredients

For the Onion Rings
  • 2 large sweet onions sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds and quartered
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour helping to create a crispy coating
  • 2 large eggs providing the perfect binding for the breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk or plant-based milk enhancing the breadcrumb adhesion
  • 1.5 cups panko breadcrumbs essential for that crunchy texture
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika adding a hint of smoky flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper infusing a mild sass
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt enhancing all flavors
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper contributing a pungent kick
Optional Dipping Sauce
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by peeling the sweet onions and slicing them into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Carefully separate each round into quarters, patting them dry with a paper towel.
Breading Station Setup
  1. Create three shallow bowls: one with flour mixed with salt and pepper, one with whisked eggs and milk, and the third with panko breadcrumbs mixed with paprika, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
Breading the Onion Rings
  1. Dredge each onion piece in the flour mixture, dip into the egg-milk mixture, then coat with the panko mixture. Place them on a parchment-lined tray and let rest for about 5 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for about 3 minutes and lightly spray the basket with oil.
  2. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer, mist lightly with oil, and cook for 6 minutes. Flip, mist again with oil, and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until golden-brown.
Serving
  1. Transfer the hot onion rings to a serving platter, sprinkle lightly with sea salt, and serve immediately with your chosen dipping sauce.

Notes

Ensure onion pieces are completely dry before breading for the best results. Experiment with spices for added flavor and consider double-dipping for thicker breading.
