  • to taste fresh rosemary sprigs (optional for garnish) Adds a hint of greenery and aroma.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm milk and sugar together. Sprinkle the yeast over the top, stir gently, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until you see a frothy layer forming.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and your optional spices (cinnamon and nutmeg). Create a well in the center and pour in the frothy yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs. Mix until it starts to come together into a dough.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, until it’s soft, smooth, and just slightly tacky. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle in more flour. If it feels too dry, add a splash more warm milk.
  4. Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, until it’s doubled in size.
Shaping & Baking
  1. Punch the risen dough down gently to release the air. Transfer it to a lightly floured surface and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12-14 inches in length.
  2. Braid the three ropes together to form a loaf shape, then join the ends to create a circle and pinch to seal it into a wreath.
  3. Place the wreath on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet and let it rise again for another 30-45 minutes, until puffed up.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk for the egg wash. Gently brush this over the surface of the wreath.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. The internal temperature should reach around 190°F (88°C) when it’s done.
  6. Let the bread cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
Decorating & Serving
  1. Dust with powdered sugar for a snowy effect and add fresh rosemary sprigs for a touch of elegance, if desired.
  2. Serve warm or toasted the next day for a delightful breakfast treat.

Notes

To make your Christmas Wreath Sliced Bread even more special, consider customizing flavors or adding fillings such as dried fruits or nuts. Always allow the dough to rise adequately for best results.
