Ingredients

Cake Base
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, water)
Flavor Enhancers
  • 1/2 cup peppermint syrup for a refreshing twist
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract optional, but highly recommended
Whipped Topping
  • 2 cups whipped cream store-bought or homemade
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder or chocolate shavings for extra chocolatey goodness
Toppings
  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes for festive crunch

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the instructions, incorporating the required eggs, oil, and water.
  2. Pour the batter into a 9x13-inch baking pan and bake as directed. Let the cake cool completely.
Flavoring
  1. In a small saucepan, gently heat the peppermint syrup over low heat for about 2-3 minutes before removing from heat and letting it cool.
Assembly
  1. Poke holes evenly across the surface of the cooled cake with a fork or skewer. Pour the cooled peppermint syrup all over the cake.
  2. In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Mix in the optional peppermint extract if desired.
  3. Spread the whipped cream generously over the cake.
  4. Sprinkle cocoa powder or chocolate shavings on top along with the crushed candy canes.
  5. Slice the cake into squares and serve.

Notes

For a more intense peppermint flavor, add extra peppermint extract to the whipped cream. You can also substitute crushed Oreos for candy canes or add chocolate chips to the whipped cream for texture.
