Ingredients

Casserole Ingredients
  • 4 cups green beans (fresh or frozen) Choose vibrant green beans for a fresh taste.
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup This rich and creamy base adds a delightful depth of flavor.
  • 1/2 cup milk Enhances the creaminess of the soup.
  • 1 tsp soy sauce Adds umami and a hint of savory complexity.
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper A subtle spice to elevate the dish's flavor profile.
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions These provide a satisfying crunch and are the star topping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare your green beans: If using frozen beans, thaw and drain them. For fresh beans, trim and blanch them until tender-crisp. If using canned beans, simply drain them.
  2. Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 350 degrees F or adjust your air fryer to the same temperature.
  3. Measure the fried onions: Divide the fried onions into two portions – 2/3 cup for mixing into the casserole and 1/3 cup for topping later.
Mixing
  1. Make the soup mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and soy sauce until smooth and well-blended.
  2. Combine the ingredients: Add the prepared green beans, 2/3 cup of fried onions, and black pepper to the soup mixture. Fold gently until evenly coated.
Baking
  1. Transfer to baking dish: Pour the savory mixture into a 9x9-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  2. Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 25 minutes. If using the air fryer, cook for 10 minutes.
  3. Finish with extra crunch: After the initial baking, stir the casserole gently, sprinkle the reserved fried onions over the top, and return it to the oven. Bake for another 5 minutes in the oven or 2 minutes in the air fryer until golden and bubbly.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider adding garlic powder or onion powder to the soup mixture. You can also layer in some shredded cheese for additional creaminess. If short on time, using frozen green beans can cut down preparation time significantly.
