Ingredients

For the trifle
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or 1 homemade chocolate cake) The base of this dessert is chocolaty and moist.
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for whipping) Creates the light, fluffy whipped cream.
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar Adds sweetness and stability.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances all the flavors.
  • 2 cups canned or fresh cherries (pitted, with juice or syrup) These tart cherries are the star of the show.
  • 1/4 cup cherry juice (from the canned cherries or fresh) Helps to moisten the chocolate cake.
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (store-bought or homemade) The creamy element that binds the dessert together.
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate shavings (or grated chocolate) For extra chocolatey goodness.
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional for garnish) Adds an elegant touch to the presentation.

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package instructions or your favorite homemade recipe. Once baked, allow it to cool completely before cutting it into small cubes.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip the cream until soft peaks form.
  3. If using canned cherries, drain them and reserve the juice. For fresh cherries, pit them and mix them with a bit of cherry juice to enhance their flavor.
Assembly
  1. In a large trifle dish, layer your components: start with chocolate cake cubes, followed by cherries, then vanilla pudding, and finally whipped cream. Repeat these layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with whipped cream on top.
Chill
  1. Cover the assembled trifle and refrigerate for 2-4 hours, or ideally overnight, to allow flavors to meld together.

Notes

For an extra burst of flavor, consider adding almond extract to the whipped cream or pudding. Top with extra cherries and chocolate shavings right before serving for an eye-catching presentation. If making a homemade chocolate cake seems daunting, using a high-quality store-bought mix can save time.
