Preparation
- Prepare the chocolate cake according to the package instructions or your favorite homemade recipe. Once baked, allow it to cool completely before cutting it into small cubes.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip the cream until soft peaks form.
- If using canned cherries, drain them and reserve the juice. For fresh cherries, pit them and mix them with a bit of cherry juice to enhance their flavor.
Assembly
- In a large trifle dish, layer your components: start with chocolate cake cubes, followed by cherries, then vanilla pudding, and finally whipped cream. Repeat these layers until you run out of ingredients, finishing with whipped cream on top.
Chill
- Cover the assembled trifle and refrigerate for 2-4 hours, or ideally overnight, to allow flavors to meld together.
Notes
For an extra burst of flavor, consider adding almond extract to the whipped cream or pudding. Top with extra cherries and chocolate shavings right before serving for an eye-catching presentation. If making a homemade chocolate cake seems daunting, using a high-quality store-bought mix can save time.
