Preparation
- Begin by cutting your chocolate cake into bite-sized cubes; make sure the pieces are uniform for even layering and presentation.
- Rinse and wash the cherries, then reserve some for garnishing later. Cut the rest in half if desired, letting the juice flow to enhance the flavor.
- In a large mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
Layering
- In a trifle dish or individual serving glasses, add a layer of chocolate cake cubes at the bottom.
- Generously drizzle some cherry syrup over the cake cubes, allowing it to seep in for added moisture and flavor.
- Layer in the prepared cherries, followed by a layer of whipped cream. Repeat this process until you reach the top of your serving dish.
- The final layer should be a generous dollop of whipped cream, adorned with dark chocolate shavings and chopped nuts.
Chill
- Allow the trifle to chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours for the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Notes
For a fresher taste, opt for homemade chocolate cake. Add a splash of lemon juice to enhance the cherry flavor. Experiment with flavored whipped creams or other nuts. Assemble layers separately if making ahead, mixing just before serving for the best texture.
