Method
Preparation of Apples
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the diced apples, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to ensure the apple pieces are evenly coated with the mixture.
- Let this sit while you prepare the batter, allowing flavors to meld.
Making the Batter
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture, stirring just until combined. Gently fold in the diced apple mixture.
Frying the Fritters
- In a deep skillet, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry the fritters in batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Drain the fritters on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Making the Glaze
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk (or apple cider), and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.
- Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or sugar as desired.
Glazing the Fritters
- Dip the warm fritters into the glaze or drizzle it over them. Serve warm.
Notes
Choose a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor. Keep the oil temperature consistent for crispy fritters. Experiment with spices for unique flavors.
