Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 2 cups water or milk (or both) For a creamier texture, use milk.
  • 2 medium apples (preferably Honeycrisp) Chopped into small pieces.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Don’t skimp on the cinnamon for best flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt Essential to enhance flavors.
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or brown sugar (optional) For added sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or raisins (optional) For extra texture and flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Toast the steel-cut oats in a dry pan over medium heat for about 3 minutes until nutty.
  2. Add the water or milk to the pan along with the chopped apples and cinnamon.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally.
  4. Cook until the oats are creamy, and the apples are tender, approximately 25-30 minutes.
  5. Serve hot, optionally topped with additional apple slices, nuts, or a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Notes

Let the oats sit for a bit after cooking to thicken. Refrigerate any leftovers for up to 4 days and reheat with a splash of milk or water.
