Instructions
- Whisk together dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Cream together softened butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a dough forms.
- Divide dough into two portions, coloring one pink and the other orange.
- Wrap dough portions in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness, then cut out heart shapes.
- Bake cookies for 8-10 minutes until edges are light golden.
- Cool cookies completely on wire racks.
- Decorate with royal icing to create floral patterns.
- Optional: Sprinkle with edible glitter or colored sprinkles.
- Allow icing to set before serving or packaging.
Notes
For healthier options, substitute whole wheat flour and natural sweeteners. Be sure to not overbake cookies for best results.
